Crush won Single of the Year (Here) at the 2003 East Coast Music Association (ECMA) Awards and Best New Group CHR (Live) at the 2003 Canadian Music Weeks (CMW) Radio Music Awards. The band was also a 2002 ECMA winner for New Group of the Year and Rock Group of the Year and nominated for a 2002 Canadian Independent Music Award in the Rock Album of the Year category.
Individually, front men Paul and Cory draw from a variety of diverse musical influences and backgrounds, shaping the distinctive modern-rock group that is Crush. Pauls eight years in the wildly popular band Signal Hill, Corys gospel-influenced upbringing and popularity as guitarist with such artists as Ron Hynes and Damhnait Doyle, in addition to their combined talents and experience as songwriters and performers, merge to create the bands unique sound and stage presence.
We have a great chemistry together, says Paul. Initially, we were each going to do the solo singer-songwriter thing and we just decided to put a band together. We thought it would be a little more creative, a little less lonely on the road.
Here, Crushs twelve-song all-original debut album was produced by Peter Prilesnik (Sarah Harmer, Big Sugar, Ashley MacIsaac). Recorded at The Sonic Temple in Halifax, NS and Soundpark Studios in Cape Breton, NS and mastered at Sterling Sound in New York, NY, the album exudes insightful lyrics, catchy, finely crafted melodies, strong harmonies and innovative, skilful guitar sounds.
The searing electric guitars, punchy bass lines and splashy drumming make no secret of their classic-rock influence, writes the Ottawa Citizen. But what separates them from the pack is that Tetford and Lamb have a knack for writing radio-friendly songs. Plus, they can sing.
"We didnt go into the studio with any preconceived ideas, says Cory of their first recording experience together. We played our songs and pushed ourselves and each other every step of the way. The album reveals our common ground."
Here covers a wide variety of topics that most people can relate to, adds Paul. Its mostly about life experiences: helping a friend through a difficult situation, love lost, making a fresh start, jealously, deception, enjoying life, making choices, and self realization. All of these experiences ultimately make us stronger as individuals, says Cory.
Crushs first single Live, released to Rock, CHR and AC radio in February 2002, quickly earned adds on major radio stations across the country, reaching Top 10 Canadian, Top 20 AC & Top 20 CHR and becoming one of #3 Most Spun Songs on CHUM FM/Toronto.
The song [Live] made waves at various adult and contemporary hit radio stations across Canada, gaining enough success for the Halifax band to join the ranks of Five For Fighting or Edwin McCain among the sensitive AC rock elite, writes Chartattack. The video for Live was voted #2 on MuchMoreMusics Top 10.com (for over 10 weeks) and reached #6 on the MuchMoreMusic Countdown. Its a song about living your life to the fullest, Paul explains. If youre not happy with your life, change it.
The much-anticipated second single and title track from the album, Here was released to radio in July 2002 and its video is currently in rotation on MuchMoreMusic & MTV Canada. Here is about being in a relationship that you know is over, Paul says. You realize that you arent with the person you want to be with; you wonder if you will ever find the right person. The video for Here was featured on MuchMoreMusics Top 10.com for over 15 weeks, reaching #2.
Crush released their third single Leaving in February 2003.
Amoung the fans who caught Crushs live show recently was Jann Arden, who wrote in her website journal: Saw my new favourite band last night...Crush...fanbloodytastic. What good guys they are. Holy singing like bloody little cherubs those! I mean it, singing their ever-loving hearts out.

The group has also performed dates with The Tragically Hip, Nickelback, Our Lady Peace, Shaggy, The Proclaimers, Nelly Furtado, Live, Great Big Sea, Amanda Marshall, Tom Cochrane, The Jayhawks, Blue Rodeo, Big Sugar, The Grapes of Wrath, The Northern Pikes, The Skydiggers, 54*40, The Tea Party, The Moffats, The Watchmen and The Cowboy Junkies.
