Their sound is a distinguished mix of bracing riffs, deep grooves, soulful vocals and swirling harmonies. HOOKAH BROWN’s songs combine American and British influences in equal measure, resulting in a sound that reflects their line-up of two Americans—Robinson, guitars/vocals and Bill Dobrow, drums—and as many Brits: John Hogg, lead vocals and Fionn O’Lochlainn, bass.
Robinson’s potent, insistent riffs and Hogg’s urgent, throaty vocals underline the dramatic imagery of “Cut The World,” while “Stand Up” is both hard-charging and melodically lush. The slow-burning “Rude To Me” unfolds an array of guitar riffs and tones, set against vocals that ooze sex and drama. Soaring melodic hooks and harmonies highlight the acoustic “When You Will,” with Robinson’s dulcimer accenting the song’s aching quality.
As guitarist and co-songwriter of The Black Crowes, a band noted for their fierce and genuine rock ‘n’ roll, Robinson achieved worldwide sales exceeding 15 million albums and vast critical acclaim. The Black Crowes built on their live reputation by performing shows with such artists as Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead and Neil Young. They also uniquely collaborated with Jimmy Page, playing together onstage the songs of Led Zeppelin and The Black Crowes plus vintage blues numbers. The tour—hailed as a historic collaboration--was captured on 2000's gold-certified album Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes, Live At The Greek.
When The Black Crowes parted ways in early 2002, Robinson continued to write songs and began to assemble HOOKAH BROWN. He joined forces with lead vocalist and songwriter John Hogg. The son of a Nigerian mother and Swedish father, Hogg was lead singer of the British rock group Moke, whom opened various shows for The Black Crowes. HOOKAH BROWN’s powerful rhythm section is manned by drummer Bill Dobrow and bass player Fionn O’Lochlainn, two musicians who’ve toured and recorded extensively.
“One of my goals is to keep HOOKAH BROWN a four-piece,” says Robinson. “I don't want to try and re-make The Black Crowes. I want to take what I learned from the band and try it in a different context. It's all about leaving space in the music.”
