In 2002, Rick took home two Gemini awards for Best Writing and Best Performance for his hit CBC Comedy Made In Canada. In the spring of 2001, Mercer made comedy history in Canada by creating and co-producing the one-hour CBC special, Rick Mercer's Talking to Americans, which attracted 2.7 million viewers across Canada, making it the highest rated comedy special in the history of Canadian television. The special drew rave reviews and media attention across North America and the world, featuring articles in the L.A. Times, The New York Times, Le Monde, The Wall Street Journal, and appearances on Nightline with Ted Koppel and NBC's The Today Show. His outstanding contribution to comedy with a political punch has been recognized with 20 Gemini Awards for both writing and performing on the top-rated series This Hour Has 22 Minutes and Made In Canada. Other Awards include the Atlantic Journalism Award, a Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Artist of the Year Award and Five Canadian Comedy Awards. Rick was also presented with an honorary Doctor of Letters from Laurentian University in 2002. Mercer's additional highlights include hosting duties on the history series It Seems Like Yesterday, the Juno Awards, the East Coast Music Awards, and Canada Day on Parliament Hill. His current CBC show, Rick Mercer's Monday Report, is a national hit.

Hailing from St. John's Newfoundland, Mercer premiered his one-man show at Ottawa's National Arts Centre (NAC) in 1990. Show Me the Button, I'll Push It became a national hit and was performed from St. John's to Vancouver. His second one-man show, the critically acclaimed I've Killed Before; I'll Kill Again opened at NAC in 1992. It played to sold-out houses across Canada. His latest single-hander, A Good Place to Hide, also premiered at the NAC in May 1995, and was met with critical praise and full houses. Time and Maclean's have published his work, and in June1998, his first book, Streeters was published by Doubleday and quickly rose to #1 on the Globe and Mail's National Best Seller List.
