Frustrated by the limitations of stand-up comedy, Reynolds created a different, more honest approach to the form. His first one-man show, Only The Truth Is Funny, drew raves for anecdotal humor that was as theraputic for audiences as it was for the performer himself. Reynolds' follow-up, ALL GROWN UP AND NO PLACE TO GO, has proven just as popular since its debut last year. Mixing self-deprecating humor with wrenching reflections on marriage and parenthood, this autobiographical monologue is strewn with insights that are as funny as they are real.
As Rick notes in the booklet accompanying this specially-priced two-CD set, ALL GROWN UP AND NO PLACE TO GO is "life for what it is -- that's right, a living hell with a few laughs thrown in to break the monotony." Reynolds had been doing standup for most of the 1980s when -- drawing on training that included philosophy, acting, and play-writing -- he came up with the unabashed confessional Only The Truth Is Funny. The 1990 show, by turns both hilarious and painful, drew sellout audiences in Los Angeles and New York theaters, and earned Emmy and Ace nominations when broadcast as a special on the Showtime Cable Network.
Rick's new sitcom, Life...And Stuff, is tailored to this same performing style. Reynolds plays harried advertising executive Rick Boswell, who with his wife Ronnie (Pam Dawber) and their two sons find that life and stuff in the '90s isn't quite Leave It To Beaver. The series begins airing on CBS-TV in March.
