Sammy Kershaw
Kershaw's latest effort is a collaboration with long-time friend and sometime singing partner Lorrie Morgan. The collection, I've Finally Found Someone, released Apri 17, 2001 by RCA Records, features 6 duets by the pair and solo selections by both Sammy and Lorrie. The first single, He Drinks Tequila, is a fun and frisky duet that picks up where Maybe Not Tonight, left off. Kershaw and Morgan, were chosen to sing at the 54th Presidential Inaugural of President George W. Bush, a truly special event for Kershaw who has never made a secret of his own political aspirations, to someday become Governor of his home state of Louisiana. Entertaining comes naturally for Kershaw who began playing clubs and Honky Tonks and opening for stars such as George Jones, Merle Haggard and Ray Price, while barely in his teens. Sammy grew up quickly with the tragic loss of his father. The oldest of four children, he took on a role that matured him while still a very young man. With intense personal challenges and the inherent pressures of performing night after night in nightclubs and bars, Sammy had problems with substance abuse and addictions. His mettle and personal fortitude strengthened him and allowed him to clean-up "cold turkey" in 1988. For the first time in his life, he wasn't performing. He left the music business and got a "real-job" as a remodeling supervisor for Wal-Mart. With renewed strength and a new lease on life, Sammy was ready in 1990 when Mercury Records heard a demo tape and knew immediately that he was someone special. His debut album, Don't Go Near the Water, released in 1991, soared to platinum status and Kershaw was on his way to the top. Sammy Kershaw contributed several platinum albums and #1 records to the historic 1990's, the biggest decade ever for country music. Widely known for upbeat songs like Cadillac Style and She Don't Know She's Beautiful topping the national charts, Sammy's soulful side netted him several Top 10 ballads, including Meant to Be, Haunted Heart, and Love of My Life which was a #1 song for the country tenor. But perhaps the biggest contributions to his credit are not his music, but those made through the Sammy Kershaw Foundation. Based in his hometown of Kaplan, Louisiana, the foundation has donated over a million dollars in aid to children and child-related charities in south Louisiana in only a few short years. From Louisiana patients at St. Jude's, to wishes granted through Make-A-Wish, to countless camps and events for crippled or under privileged children, the foundation exists to improve the lives of children in south Louisiana. "We build baseball fields, buy winter coats, milk and diapers for kids," Kershaw explains, "we help abused kids, kids who are sick. That's what it's all about; it's all about the kids!" His spring concert, Sam Jam, held each May at Kaplan High School, is among the annual fund-raisers for the foundation. A golf tournament, softball game and auction are included in the festivities that surround the annual event. Fellow artists, athletes and Hollywood favorites donate items that help make the auction a major fund-raiser for the foundation. Even though his time at home is very busy, the various activities give Sammy extra time to spend with his mother and family members who live in the heart of Cajun country. Kershaw's artistry and philanthropy place him alongside the country music greats of all time. A natural performer, Sammy's versatility and charisma have made him a fan favorite for a decade. With the release of I've Finally Found Someone, Sammy and Lorrie will leave fans breathless, restless and ready for more. Sammy is very involved in helping abused and under privileged children and in 1994 he founded the Sammy Kershaw Foundation of Acadiana.
