In 1995, Sommore’s classic stand-up act earned her the Richard Pryor Award for Comic Of The Year. As the winner of this prestigious award, she was selected as the first female host of BET’s Comic View. She hosted the show for an entire year, which brought her into millions of homes daily. Also in that year, over 20 million viewers got to see Sommore’s brilliant stand-up comedy firsthand when Oprah Winfrey handpicked her to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Appearing on the show was a milestone in Sommore’s career; Oprah dubbed Sommore as “a force to be reckoned with in the New Millennium.”
In 2000, Sommore was chosen to be a part of the highly successful The Kings & Queens of Comedy tour. The tour garnered Sommore a wider fan base and got her registered in Guinness’ Book of World Records as being the first female comedienne to perform before an audience of over 44,000 people in Atlanta, GA at the Georgia Dome; never has a female comedienne accomplished that. Other noteworthy accomplishments for Sommore include several appearances on The Hughleys (UPN). Sommore has also appeared on The Parkers (UPN) and was a favorite on the very controversial Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher (ABC). Rapper/Actor Busta Rhymes even penned a song after her, entitled, “Gimme Sommore”.
In 2001, The Queens of Comedy made-for-television movie was the highest rated and longest running special in the history of the Showtime Network. Sommore made her movie debut in Marcus Rayboy’s Next Friday Part 3 - The Friday After Next. She portrayed a sassy waitress named Cookie. Sommore co-starred with “Friday” veterans, Ice Cube, Mike Epps, Don “DC” Curry and John Witherspoon. Sommore recently starred and received great reviews in “Family Reunion”.
In 2002, Sommore wowed audiences at the Aspen Comedy Festival. Whoopi Goldberg, a festival participant, acknowledged Sommore as one the industry’s most diverse comediennes.She also filmed “A Miami Tale”; an independent film which premiered at the Miami Black Film Festival winning rave reviews for her performance.She also received a grammy nomination for the Queens of Comedy for best Comedy album spoken word.
In 2003, Sommore made her ABC Network premiere on the Emmy™ Award winning show, The View. Later that year, she sat down with the incomparable Jay Leno on The Tonight Show (NBC). CNN’s Headline News invited her to discuss her impact on comedy as the highest grossing comedienne in the country during the past three years. Her continued appearances across the country, will keep her at the top of the list for years to come. Sommore was the subject of Comedy Central’s “Special Women in Comedy” special, which featured the life of the comedienne. Sommore filmed “Soul Plane”, a spoof of the hit movie “Airplane. “Soul Plane” stars fellow comedian D.L. Hughley and Hip-hop superstar, Snoop Dogg. Sommore’s recently completed filming “Walter Latham Presents…”another comedy DVD with an all star male cast. The critics have already dubbed her performance as honest and brillant.
Sommore is currently developing her own sitcom for network television. She continues to perform to sold out audiences across the country, earning her the distinct reputation of being the only female comic accepted in the “boys club” of stand-up comedy.
