The Original Butt Sketch
In 1981, when he graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering, he didn't think he would use his degree for the rest of his life. In fact, Newton didn't want to. He wanted to sketch, paint and draw, but he didn't know that someday he would be known as the "Original Butt Sketch Artist." "To me it's fun," says the Dallas resident. "A lot of people hear about what I do and they automatically put it down. But then they come and see what it actually is and they like it and they end up standing in line to have their butt sketched." One man standing in line to have his derriere sketched during Newton's stint this week at the Video Software Dealers Association convenion explained the attraction. "It looks fun," the man siad, adding he had heard about it before. When he learned Newton was at the convention and saw the artist at work, he decided to have it done. As a single parent, Newton has witnessed the hard times. He recalls the days of old when he used to stand out on street corners sketching and selling hiw work, in order to take care of his daughter. "Back then, I created the situation that I was in," says Newton. "I gave up a well-paying job because I wanted to do what I wanted to do." If the saying "success depends on hard work" means anything, it doesn't apply to Newton. Not to say that sketching is an easy thing to do, but Newton's job is anything but complicated or stressful. In fact, it's more like simple and relaxing. "Look at my job," Newton says. "It's not hard. I wake up in the morning and do what I want to do. I don't have to say 'Oh no, another day of this.' For me it's 'I can't wait to get to work.' I've sketched as many as 35,000 butts in the last four years and I like what I do. I am truly a butt man." The artist says there are no specific derrieres that he would like to sketch because he's seen every size and shape. But when asked whose would he really love to sketch, he said after a pause, "All of the Playboy Playmates of the Month, for the next five years."
