Considered by some to be the forerunner of folk-country that crossed the line into pop in the 1970’s, Jody Miller is best known for her song “Queen of the House,” her musical editorial directed at Roger Miller’s “King of the Road.”
Miller, known as Myrna Joy Miller to her parents and hometown in Oklahoma, started playing guitar at age 14. As a teen, she joined a folk group and got a steady job playing a local coffeehouse. She was eventually discovered there by the Limelighters’ Lou Gottlieb, who offered his assistance in getting her a recording contract if she would move to L.A. Miller and her husband eventually agreed to go and give it a try. She landed an audition with Capitol Records and she was signed, changing her name to Jody so she would sound “folkier.” She released the album My Country in 1987, a collection of patriotic songs that gained her recognition from President-elect George Bush. Bush asked her to perform at his inaugural ball in 1988. Her daughter later convinced her to concentrate on country music and they began performing as a duo
