James Whitmore was nominated for an Academy Award for his virtuoso performance as Harry S. Truman in "Give 'Em Hell Harry!" He has also toured nationally as Teddy Roosevelt in "Bully!" and in the title role of the acclaimed "Will Rogers, USA," for which Whitmore is generally regarded as the pioneer of the one-man show.
An accomplished actor, he has appeared in numerous films including: Nuts; Kiss Me Kate; The Next Voice You Hear; Black Like Me; Battle Cry, and most recently, The Shawshank Redemption. His television work includes My Friend Tony, Temperature's Rising and The Law and Mr. Jones. He continues to work in the theater, playing such roles as Oliver Wendell Holmes in The Magnificent Yankees and Sheridan Whiteside in The Man Who Came to Dinner.
