Considered by his peers likely to be a future Nobel prize winner, MIT professor Paul Krugman shatters economic myths with a style both courageous and controversial.
KEY TOPICS economic theory * global trade policy and practices * competition
A highly praised economic theorist, Krugman possesses a rare ability to explain basic economics in layman’s terms. His several books have earned large audiences in academic, political and public circles. Two examples are his bestseller, The Age of Diminished Expectations: U.S. Economic Policy in the 1990s, and the popular Peddling Prosperity: Economic Sense and Nonsense in the Age of Diminished Expectations.
Krugman’s latest, widely acclaimed book, Pop Internationalism, takes on prominent politicians and economists who he contends are dead wrong in asserting that the biggest threat to the U.S. economy is foreign competition. By perpetuating this myth, Krugman says, policy makers are distracting the country from the far more pressing economic problem of low productivity growth.
Business Week calls Krugman “The Reigning Young Turk of economics [who] not only knows his math but also wields a mean pen.” His reputation was established early in his career. In 1991, Krugman received the prestigious John Bates Clark Medal, a prize given every two years by the American Economic Association to the best American economist under age 40.
