New York-based Atlantic Starr began in 1976. Brothers David (guitar, vocals), Jonathan (trombone), and Wayne (keyboards) Lewis started a funk-soul band, adding lead vocalist Sharon Bryant, bassist Clifford Archer, drummer Porter Carroll, saxophonist Koran Daniels, percussionist/flutist Joseph Phillips, and trumpeter William Sudderth. They signed with A&M a couple of years later, staying through 1987 and landing several hits, among them "Gimme Your Lovin'," "Circles," "When Love Calls," "Stand Up," "Silver Shadow," "One Love," and the crossover hit "Secret Lovers." Their albums Brilliance and As the Band Turns were also Top 20 pop hits, their most successful A&M LPs. They switched to Warner Bros. in 1987, and their first release, All in the Name of Love, included another pop smash, "Always," the group's sole number one pop and R&B hit. They enjoyed more R&B successes with Warner through the '80s. Sharon Bryant left in 1989 for Polydor; she was replaced by Barbara Weathers, who later left for a solo career as well.
