The Wall Street Journal hailed former Congressman Alan Wheat as a "political star for the year 2000." Time magazine pointed to him as a bright and able leader for the "new generation" of African-American elected officials. Making history as one of the nation's first African- Americans to be elected to a non-minority district, Wheat proved his skills as a public policy leader, coalition builder, and effective national legislator. In 1994, he was selected as the Democratic standard bearer for the United States Senate seat from Missouri. He later served as vice president of CARE, one of the world's largest and most efficient relief and development organizations. In his capacity with Clinton-Gore '96, Wheat played an important role in President Clinton's re-election, helping map the successful strategy that returned Bill Clinton and Al Gore to a second term in office.
