Bob Griese, who is currently one of network television's most respected football analysts, is in his 19th year of broadcasting, and his 14th year as expert commentator on ABC's coverage of College Football.
Direct, frank commentary and skillful use of a telestrator during replays have helped distinguish Griese as an insightful and enlightening analyst. He was a top analyst for NBC Sports' NFL coverage from 1982 through 1986.
In addition to his regular season NFL and NCAA broadcasts, he has also covered numerous post-season bowl games, including the NFL Super Bowl XX, college football's Aloha Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl, and the initial Bowl Championship Series championship game of college football.
Known as the "thinking man's quarterback" during his brilliant 14-year NFL career with the Miami Dolphins (1967-1980), Griese was renowned for his poised leadership and ingenious play-calling during the Dolphins' dominance of the NFL in the early 1970s. He helped lead Miami to a perfect 17-0 record in the 1972 season, when the Dolphins won their first Super Bowl title, and the following year, led Miami to a second consecutive Super Bowl championship.
Griese, who became the 14th passer to join the NFL's exclusive 25,000-yard club, had a .700 winning percentage (91-39-1) under Miami head coach Don Shula. He appeared in six AFC-NFC Pro Bowls, two AFL All Star Games, and was a consensus All-Pro in 1971 and 1977. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990.
Griese's jersey, #12, is the first of only two to have been retired by the Miami Dolphins. He was one of the original group of players named to the Dolphin Honor Roll, established to honor the most outstanding individuals in Dolphin history. He was elected by the fans to be the quarterback of the Dolphins' Silver Anniversary team, commemorating their first 25 years. Griese was the first quarterback to wear eyeglasses while playing, and a pair of his glasses is on exhibit in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
A two-time All-American at Purdue, voted All-time Quarterback for Purdue's first 100 years, and named to the inaugural class of the Boilermaker Athletic Hall of Fame, Griese is a member of the National Football Foundation's College Hall of Fame.
Griese is president of the Jack Harding Miami Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, serves on the Board of the Don Shula Foundation, and is an active member of the Orange Bowl Committee.
Griese has three sons, the youngest of whom is Brian, who led the University of Michigan to a co-national championship in 1997 and was the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos this past year. Bob and Brian are co-authors of the recently released book, "Undefeated." Bob and his wife, Shay, live in Coral Gables, Florida.
