Eleanor Clift, a key member of the Newsweek political team, regularly reports on the Washington power structure. As a contributing editor, she explores the White House, Congress, and diverse personalities, including past U.S. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The election of President Jimmy Carter marked the beginning of her career as a Newsweek correspondent, a position Clift held through Ronald Reagan's first term. She later continued her coverage of the Reagan administration for the Los Angeles Times. Returning to Newsweek in 1986, she became the magazine's congressional and political correspondent. Upon the election of President Bill Clinton in 1992, she returned to the White House beat, and in June of that year was named deputy Washington bureau chief.
Now a political analyst for the Fox News Network, Clift is more visible, emerging from behind the writer's notepad to the television screen, where she appears on the nationally syndicated show, The McLaughlin Group. She has made appearances on ABC's Nightline and Good Morning America, NBC's The Today Show, CNN's Crossfire, and CBS's Murphy Brown. Her political correspondence and network exposure have also launched her onto the big screen, where she plays herself in Independence Day, Rising Sun, Murder at 1600 Pennsylvania, and Dave.
Clift and her husband, Tom Brazaitis, a columnist for the (Cleveland) Plain Dealer, wrote the book War Without Bloodshed: The Art of Politics (Scribner, June 1996). Clift is also a contributing editor to More, a new magazine aimed at women aged 40 and older.
