A very select group of people in our world have a special mission in life to inform, inspire and motivate us regarding preservation and understanding of the earth’s wildlife and habitat. One of the most dedicated and caring of those individuals is conservationist and animal expert Joan Embery. Joan serves as Conservation Ambassador for the World-Famous San Diego Zoo and in that role, captivates and inspires the public with her message of wildlife preservation.

In an effort to broaden her preservation message, she spearheads the San Diego Zoo’s "Your World" global conservation initiative—a campaign designed to raise public awareness about efforts to protect endangered species and diminishing habitats worldwide. “Sadly, there are many species that will not come with us into the next millennium. But we have new technology and new determination to dramatically change that course,” says Embery. “The public needs to know about these programs. Public education is the single most valuable tool we can use in conservation.”
The "Your World" campaign is based on the premise that each and every individual plays a part in determining what the world will be in the next millenium. “Every individual has the capability to help turn the tide and truly make a difference when it comes to deciding which species and habitat will survive the next century,” Embery emphasizes. “The "Your World" campaign hopes to motivate, inspire and help the public develop greater understanding. Public awareness of the issues and opportunities is the first step towards making a difference.”
Bringing the wild and natural world to life for the public is something Joan Embery has perfected to a science. She utilizes her extensive wildlife knowledge to educate and enthrall the public while trying to motivate everyone to get involved. In addition to her regular Tonight Show appearances with Jay Leno, She also appears on shows such as CBS This Morning, Good Morning America, Regis & Kathie Lee and Entertainment Tonight. In addition, she’s led worldwide educational tours exploring animals in their natural habitats of Africa, China, India, Nepal, New Guinea and Thailand just to name a few. But perhaps where she’s most comfortable is with the animals. She’s trained and handled some of the world’s rarest and most exotic species, from elephants to zebras and nearly everything in between.
Her commitment to wildlife evolved out of the realization that many animals are losing their struggle for survival. Embery commented, “In my lifetime, I have almost seen the extinction of species such as the California Condor and the black-footed ferret as well as the demise of critical habitat such as the rainforest. I’ve watched species decline from once well represented populations to the verge of extinction. However, we do have some very encouraging success stories such as the Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon and Grey Whale. These success stories show when people pull together, we can turn the tide and provide a second chance for the animals. That is what my life’s work is all about, educating and motivating the public to provide the world’s wildlife with that second chance.
