TIME Magazine, in a cover story of Letitia Baldrige, called her “the foremost American authority on manners.” She was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Omaha, Nebraska, and Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Connecticut. She has a B.A. in psychology from Vassar College, and did graduate work at the University of Geneva, in Switzerland. Her diplomatic career in embassies included working as a special assistant to Ambassador David Bruce in Paris and Ambassador Clare Boothe Luce in Rome. She was Tiffany & Co.’s first woman executive and then served as Social Secretary to the White House and Chief of Staff for Mrs. John F. Kennedy. She opened her own marketing and public relations business in 1964. She has served on several corporate boards, as well as non-profit ones. Her major activities today are in the writing and the executive training fields. She has published eighteen books on manners, entertaining, and design, starting with an autobiography, Roman Candle (Houghton Mifflin) in 1956, and including her latest, another autobiography, A Lady, First (Viking) in October 2001. She has led an exciting life in high places, is a well-known lecturer, appears regularly on television, and publishes an international monthly newsletter on business behavior (Executive Advantage, published by Briefings, Inc.)
She is married to Robert Hollensteiner, a real estate consultant. They live in Washington, D.C., have two children, five grandchildren and two dogs.
