Morris came to CNN in 1996 from WPIX-TV in New York, where she was a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor. She established herself as a broadcast journalist in San Francisco where she worked for KRON-TV as a researcher, general assignment reporter, and ultimately an anchor. In 1982, Morris went on to San Francisco's KGO-TV as an anchor before joining KCBS radio in 1985 as its morning anchor. In 1987, Morris became a general assignment reporter and anchor for KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, then returned to San Francisco's KCBS radio in 1989 as an anchor and host of With the Family in Mind, a self-created national radio commentary on CBS Network Radio.
Morris has received various awards, including the 1999 San Jose State University Alumni Award for Outstanding African American. Other awards include: the Black Woman of the Year Award, the American Women in Radio and Television's Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting Award and the Award of Courage from the National Organization for Women. Morris also won three California Emmy Awards for her participation in team coverage of breaking news events, and she also won two Radio/Television News Director Association awards.
Morris graduated from San Jose State University in California with a degree in journalism. Morris received a master's in broadcasting from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, which she attended on a New York Times Fellowship.
