Soul Statement
A nine-piece band with male & female vocalists and a 3-piece horn section, Soul Statement has been methodically built, section by section, to go the long haul. The map of its musical influences forms a triangle with Chicago, Memphis and Detroit as its cardinal points. Hence, the band’s repertoire of quality funk and soul by artists such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Tyrone Davis, Tower of Power, Little Milton, Rufus Thomas, Eddie Floyd, Joe Tex and many more. There is also an ever-expanding body of original material to offer. Soul Statement is sure to win you over with its diverse repertoire and personnel. The ability to alternate between a male and female vocalist insures the listener a rich and varied musical experience. Pure voiced tenor, Robert Hall, brings the gritty funk of James Brown and the sweet soul of Otis Redding or Stevie Wonder. In fact, many note Robert’s uncanny resemblance to Stevie. Soulful female vocalist, Joi Leavell brings a funky punch to the mix. She has been singing in the church all her life and her gospel roots shine through. It has been said that she sounds a lot like Tina Turner. Charter members Rich Rauch Jr. on bass and Nate Mainor on drums throw down a groove so tight you can set your watch to it! Guitarist/founder James Beck was born into a world of music. He began playing guitar at a very young age and has fronted many funk, soul and jazz bands through the years. Keyboard player, Nathan Nanfelt, comes from a jazz background and also has an impeccable sense of rhythm. Look out when he starts to solo! And, last but certainly not least, who could possible overlook that punchy Soul Statement horn section! Trumpet player Hiroshi Yasuda hails from Tokyo, Japan and has extensive performing experience on both sides of the world. His high notes can’t help but demand your attention! Baritone saxman Adam Devlin-Brown gives the band its necessary honk and growl filling out the low end of the horn section. Smack dab in the middle of all that hornyness sits multireedist Dan Kaplan. The band wrestled him from the mountains of Colorado. You’re gonna have to fasten your seatbelts when he starts to blow! With all this dynamic talent, you can’t miss with Soul Statement.
