Gladys Horton & The Marvelettes

A star at the tender age of 15, Gladys Horton will always be remembered as the original voice of "The Marvelettes," the female group which gave Motown Records it's first certified number one hit with the forever classic song "Please Mr. Postman."

The original Marvelettes consisted of Gladys Horton, Wanda Young, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman and Juanita Cowart. The Marvelettes meteoric fame and worldwide success caused Juanita to leave the group early in their career. Gladys lead vocals and the remaining members strong background vocals kept them going strong as they racked up hit after hit, enjoying immense popularity as a foursome up till Georgeanna's untimely passing in 1965.

Gladys and the Marvelettes will be forever remembered for such hits as "Playboy," "Beachwood 45789," "Too Many Fish In The Sea," "Don't Mess With Bill," and many other great Motown songs. In 1968 Gladys retired from the group so she could dedicate herself to her duties as a mother, the remaining members continued for a little while until finally disbanding in 1970.

Gladys continued to stay active and concentrated on her writing skill during the 1970's, she also made numerous solo appearances and from time to time did reunion shows with the remaining original members of The Marvelettes. During the resurgence of nostalgia acts and the Motown sound, Gladys along with many original stars of the 1960's began to resurface and perform as they vowed to battle the spread of phony singing groups, whose performances included using the groups names while not having any original members. This practice has angered many fans and stars whose voices and reputations were being capitalized on by unscrupulous agents and managers.

Gladys Horton's voice as the original singer of The Marvelettes still carries the melodic tones which she and the group are famous for. Her performances rekindle visions of the Motown Revue shows and the Motown crowd still loves hearing her. She is the one and only voice of The Marvelettes and there is no one who can replace her.
